Compressor Clutch: Service and Repair
Hitachi Axial Type Model MJS170

Removal

1.

Using clutch hub wrench, KV99412306 or equivalent, hold clutch hub and remove shaft nut from shaft.

2.

Using clutch hub puller, KV994C5780 equivalent, remove clutch hub. Thread tool into bore of clutch hub, hold tool with wrench, and thread in
center bolt.

3.

Pry off inner snap ring.

4.

Remove pulley and bearing assembly. If assembly cannot be removed by hand, use tool Nos. KV994C5781 and KV994C5782 or equivalents.

5.

Remove clamping screws that secure coil assembly leads, remove inner snap ring from coil assembly, then remove coil assembly from front cover.

6.

Check friction surfaces of clutch for damage. If necessary, replace coil, pulley and bearing assembly and clutch hub as a set.

7.

Clean friction surfaces of clutch with suitable solvent.

8.

Check continuity of coil and repair or replace as necessary. 

Installation

1.

Install coil assembly on compressor, properly positioning terminals, then install snap ring.

2.

Using suitable plastic hammer, drive pulley and bearing assembly onto neck of front cover. Turn pulley to ensure that there is no noise and that
pulley turns freely. Ensure that there is no pulley play.

3.

Install inner snap ring.

4.

Fit key and clutch hub to shaft. Select adjusting spacer that gives correct clearance of .020-.031 inch between pulley and clutch hub.

5.

Coat shaft nut with Loctite or equivalent and, torque nut to 14-15 ft. lbs.

6.

Measure clutch hub-to-pulley gap. If gap is not .020-.031 inch, replace adjusting spacer and readjust.

7.

If compressor clutch assembly was replaced, engage and disengage clutch approximately thirty times for break-in.
