Insert rack gear from gear housing side.

Properly mesh pinion with rack and insert pinion assembly into groove.

On Pulsar and Stanza, install gear housing snap ring of thickness which will limit axial play to less than .004 inch.

On Sentra, torque rear cover to 3.6-7.2 ft. lbs., then the locknut to 36-51 ft. lbs.

On all models, ensure that rack protrudes the same amount from both ends of housing.
8.
Install new oil seal, packing sealing lips with suitable lubricant.
9.
Ensure that pinion assembly rotates smoothly.
10.
Apply adequate amount of suitable lubricant to steering gear retainer.
11.
Insert retainer and retainer spring into housing.
12.
On Pulsar and Stanza, turn retainer adjusting screw in and install adjusting screw locknut.
13.
On Sentra, torque retainer cover to 29-43 ft. lbs., then install adjusting screw and locknut.
14.
On all models, fully tighten adjusting screw, then back off 10°-15°.
15.
Apply suitable sealant to threaded portion of locknut, then torque to 29-43 ft. lbs.
16.
Set spacer at neutral position with spacer set angle of 10° to 10° on Stanza, or 38.3° to 25.3° on Pulsar and Sentra.
17.
Measure pinion rotating torque and rack starting force. Torque should be less than 13 inch lbs. and starting force should be 22-31 lbs. on Pulsar,
18-40 lbs. on Sentra, or 13-29 lbs. on Stanza.

Install boot and boot band on tie rod inner socket.
19.
On Sentra with diesel engine, install rack spacer on rack end.
20.
On all models, install tie rod inner socket on rack end together with new lock plate, ensuring that lock plate ratchet enters groove at end portion of
rack.
21.
Torque tie rod inner socket to 58-72 ft. lbs., then securely bend lock plate at two cutout portions of tie rod inner socket.
22.
Install locknut and outer socket on inner socket, then torque locknut to 27-34 ft. lbs. with tie rod length set at 6.93 inches on Pulsar and Sentra, or
1.677 inches on Stanza.
23.
Measure rack stroke. Rack stroke should be as follows:
a. On Pulsar: 2.894 inches less turbocharger or 2.756 inches with turbocharger.
b. On Sentra: with gasoline engine, 2.894 inches, with diesel engine and manual transaxle, 2.756 inches, or with diesel engine and automatic
transaxle, 2.579 inches.
c. On Stanza: 2.205 inches on pinion gear side and 2.795 inches opposite pinion gear side.
24.
Install boot to gear housing, then tighten inside boot clamp securely. Boot should be neither too inflated nor too elongated.
