Sunroof / Moonroof Drain: Procedures
Drain Channel Inspection and Cleaning
The sliding window panel is designed in order to control the water entry at the seal. A properly adjusted glass panel fits snugly between the weather strip
and the roof. Use the following procedure in order to inspect for a proper fit:
1. Insert a piece of paper between the roof and the weatherstrip.
2. Close the sunroof glass.
3. Pull out the piece of paper.
You should feel some resistance when you pull the paper out from between the roof and the weatherstrip.
Allow only a minimal gap between the roof and the weatherstrip. A minimal gap is necessary in order to ensure that the water and debris going to the
sunroof drain hoses is not excessive. Objectionable wind noise may result if the gap clearances are exceeded. Complete the sunroof window to roof
adjustments by adjusting the height and the centering of the glass. Refer to Sunroof Glass Height and Opening Fit Adjustment.
The drain trough in the sunroof module provides adequate drainage. The drain trough encircles the sliding glass panel and leads to drain hoses. The drain
hoses are located in each corner of the housing. A drain channel spans the rear of the sunroof module.
The drain channel directs water into the trough. The front drain hoses route down the windshield pillars. The drain hoses discharge out the center of each
pillar between the upper and lower door hinges. The rear drain hoses route down the rear pillars into the rear wheelhouse.
If a wet headliner or other water leaks occur, verify that the drainage system is not plugged or disconnected. Before you perform any adjustments to the
sunroof, use the following procedure:
1. Use a small container in order to pour water into the module housing drain trough.
IMPORTANT: When using compressed air on the drain hoses, do not use and excessive amount.
2. If the water flow is restricted, use compressed air or a flexible wire in order to clear out any material plugging the drain system.
3. Test the drain system again.
Use the following procedure in order to further inspect for the drain hoses connections without removing the headliner:
1. Remove the sunroof control switch. Refer to Power Sunroof Switch Replacement.
2. Remove the sunroof opening trim lace which is located around the sunroof opening. Refer to Finishing Lace Replacement.
3. Remove the headliner as required. Refer to Headliner Replacement in Interior Trim.
