Ground Strap: Technician Safety Information
CAUTION:

This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System.
Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
^
Air bag deployment
^
Personal Injury
^
Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
^
Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
^
If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR
System in SIR.
^
Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF,
unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal,
also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or
its components
.
CAUTION: Batteries produce explosive gases, contain corrosive acid, and supply levels of electrical current high enough to cause burns.
Therefore, to reduce the risk of personal injury when working near a battery:
^
Always shield your eyes and avoid leaning over the battery whenever possible.
^
Do not expose the battery to open flames or sparks.
^
Do not allow the battery electrolyte to contact the eyes or the skin. Flush immediately and thoroughly any contacted areas with water and
get medical help.
^
Follow each step of the jump starting procedure in order.
^
Treat both the booster and the discharged batteries carefully when using the jumper cables.
CAUTION: Departure from these conditions or the procedure below could result in the following conditions:
^
Serious personal injury (particularly to eyes) or property damage from such causes as battery explosion, battery acid, or electrical burns
^
Damage to electronic components of either vehicle
Never expose battery to open flame or electric spark because batteries generate a gas which is flammable and explosive. Remove rings,
watches, and other jewelry. Wear approved eye protection. Do not allow battery fluid to contact eyes, skin, fabrics, or painted surfaces
because battery acid is a corrosive acid. Flush any contacted area with water immediately and thoroughly. Be careful that metal tools or
jumper cables do not contact the battery positive terminal (or metal In contact with it) and any other metal on the vehicle, because a short
circuit could occur.
CAUTION: To prevent sparking and possibly explosion of battery gases, do not connect jumper cable directly to the battery negative terminal
of the dead battery.
CAUTION: To avoid personal injury when rotating the serpentine belt tensioner on 2.4L use a tight fitting 13 mm wrench that is at least 61
centimeters (24 inches) long. This operation can be done using a J 37059 or equivalent.
