Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair
If camshafts remain in cylinder head, some valves will always be held open and cylinder head cannot be set on workbench with cylinder
head face down. Damage to valves and/or gasket surface will result.
Do not mix cam bearing caps between positions or between heads. Each cap must be reassembled in the position from which it was
removed and in the original orientation (arrow points toward front of engine).
1. Remove cylinder head as described in Cylinder Head Assembly/Service and Repair.
2. Place matchmarks on all bearing caps, then remove intake and exhaust camshafts by alternately loosening each cam bearing cap bolt two turns at a
time until valve spring pressure is completely released.
3. Remove valve lifters and arrange them so they may be installed in their original position.
4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Lubricate camshaft bearing journals with engine oil prior to installation.
b. Alternately tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts one turn at a time to specifications.
