Connecting Rod Bearing: Service and Repair
Fig. 13 Main Bearing Bolt Tightening Sequence
Shell type main bearings of steel backed aluminum are used at all positions. The upper and lower bearing halves are all interchangeable except for the
upper bearing in the No. 3 position as this is the thrust bearing. Maximum crankshaft endplay is 0.019 inch.
With the crankcase disassembled the main bearing clearance can be measured using a suitable plastic gauging material. Wipe oil from crankshaft
journals and bearing inserts. Place plastic gauging material across journals to be measured. Install lower crankcase and oil manifold. Install main bearing
bolts and using sequence shown in Fig. 13, tighten bolts to specifications. Determine clearance by comparing width of flattened plastic gauging material
with measurement increments on plastic gauging package. If bearing clearance is greater than 0.003 inch and new bearings do not reduce clearance to
0.0005 to 0.002 inch a new crankshaft is required. Undersized bearings are not available and no crankshaft grinding is allowed.
