Driver Information Center: Description and Operation
Air Bag Warning
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) displays the AIR BAG PROBLEM message when the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) determines that a
problem exists with the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. The Driver Information Center (DIC) receives the data from the instrument
cluster via serial data line.
Battery Voltage Information
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) provides battery voltage information to the instrument cluster over serial data line. The Driver Information
Center (DIC) receives the information from the cluster via serial data line and displays battery voltage when the ENG/5 button is toggled.
Charge System Warning
If the generator input is grounded for 10 seconds, the Driver Information Center (DIC) displays the CHECK CHARGE SYSTEM message. Refer to

Coolant Level Information
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) receives coolant level information from the engine coolant level switch. If the switch returns a signal indicating
a low coolant condition, the PCM transmits a low engine coolant signal to the cluster over serial data line. The cluster then transmits the information to
the Driver Information Center (DIC) and the DIC displays the LOW ENGINE COOLANT message.
Coolant Temperature Information
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) provides coolant temperature information to the Driver Information Center (DIC) over the serial data line. The
coolant temperature may be displayed by the DIC. If the coolant temperature rises above 127°C (261°F), the HOT . . STOP ENGINE message is
displayed.
Date
Date information is retained within the instrument cluster via use of the "hot at all times" feed to the cluster.
Door Ajar Warning
The instrument cluster receives the door ajar information from discrete door switch inputs. The cluster sends door ajar information to the Driver
Information Center (DIC) via serial data line. When the corresponding input is grounded and the gear selector is not in PARK or NEUTRAL, the DIC
displays the associated message.
Driver Information Center (DIC)
The Driver Information Center (DIC) has a 20-character vacuum fluorescent display that conveys information concerning various vehicle systems to the
driver. The DIC display is part of the HVAC Control Assembly, and uses serial data inputs from the instrument cluster to provide vehicle information to
the DIC. The DIC messages are accompanied by a chime within the instrument cluster. The DIC displays the following:

Fuel Level Information
The fuel gage sender provides fuel level information to the instrument cluster. The Driver Information Center (DIC) displays the LOW FUEL message
when fuel level is below 12.5 liters (3.3 gallons).
HVAC Overheated and Low Refrigerant Warning
The Driver Information Center (DIC) displays the A/C OFF... OVERHEATED message when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an AC
overheating condition. The DIC displays the LOW A/C REFRIGERANT message when the PCM determines that the refrigerant is low. The DIC
receives the HVAC information over the serial data line from the PCM via the instrument cluster.
