disconnected. If a memory retention device is plugged into the cigarette lighter socket (such as "Memor-Eze", Snap-On Tool YA960, or Kent
Moore Tools KS295A or BT 9027), this step can be omitted. Then, with the ignition in the "off" position, disconnect the negative battery cable.

Caution: 

If vehicle is equipped with Inflatable Restraint System (SIR), refer to SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT Section 9J of the 1994
Oldsmobile Carline Service Manual. Further, if a memory retention device is used, disconnect the SIR inflator module circuit by disconnecting
the YELLOW connector at the base of the steering column. Failure, to disconnect the yellow connector may result in air bag deployment with
personal injury.

With starter motor removed, remove field lead attaching screw from solenoid terminal.

Loosen but do not remove through bolts in the starter motor assembly. Do not separate the commutator end frame.

5.

Separate the frame with the armature inside from the drive end housing.

6.

Remove the thrust collar from the end of the shaft if it is not stuck in the drive end housing.

7.

Remove the pinion stop retaining ring by first prying the pinion stop collar off the ring. Pry the pinion stop ring off the armature with a small
screwdriver. Discard the ring.

NOTE:

Use care in removing (and also when installing) the retaining ring to prevent scratching or damaging the armature shaft.

Remove the pinion stop collar from the armature shaft. Discard the collar.

9.

Install the new pinion stop collar on the armature shaft. The flat side goes toward the pinion.

10.

Install the new retaining ring onto the armature shaft and seat it into the shaft groove. Use care not to damage the armature shaft.

11.

Install the thrust collar onto the armature shaft with the small flange toward the retaining ring. Use two pliers to squeeze the pinion stop collar and
the thrust collar to seat the stop collar on the retaining ring.

12.

Assemble the frame, armature, and drive assembly into the housing. Ensure the shift lever is-engaged with the drive assembly. Ensure the armature
shaft is engaged with the housing bearing. Tighten the through bolts to 8.5 Nm (75 lb.in.).

Install starter field lead to solenoid

Reinstall starter motor per instructions in service manual, Section 6D2

Reconnect the negative battery cable. If a memory retention device was not used, please reset (to the extent possible) all devices that lost their
memory after the battery was disconnected. If vehicle has SIR, re-enable the system.

16.

Install a Campaign Identification Label.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each label provides space to print the campaign number and the five (5) digit retailer code of the retailer performing the campaign. Insert this
information with a typewriter or ball-point pen. When installing label, clean and dry the surface of the radiator support tie bar and apply the campaign
label where it is readily visible.

Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in for
periodic servicing by the owner. Apply the "Campaign Identification Label" on a clean, dry surface.
