Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
System Check
1.
With ambient air temperature above 70°F, open all doors, start vehicle and set A/C mode selector, if equipped, to MAX. Coolant fan should turn
on in a short period of time.
2.
With engine coolant below operating temperature, move A/C mode selector to OFF position. Coolant fan should turn off in a short period of time.
3.
Run engine at fast idle for several minutes. The coolant fan should turn on before coolant temperature indicator comes on or coolant temperature
gauge needle reaches HOT.
4.
On 2.5L/4-151 VIN U and 3.3L/V6-204 VIN N, when ignition switch is turned to Off position, coolant fan shuts Off.
5.
On 2.3L/4-138 VIN A and D, when ignition switch is turned to Off position, coolant fan continues to run until engine temperature lowers.
Troubleshooting Hints
1.
If coolant fan does not operate, check fusible link F.
2.
On 2.5L/4-151 VIN U and 3.3L/V6-204 VIN N, if coolant fan does not operate, check HTR/A/C fuse.
3.
If coolant fan operates with ignition switch in Off position, replace coolant fan relay.
