BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT 

- REPLACE PADS/INSPECT ROTOR THICKNESS

MODELS/YEARS:

1988-91 CUTLASS SUPREME

CONDITION: Some owners of 1988-91 Cutlass Supremes may express concern with brake pedal effort.

CAUSE:

This vehicle has 4-wheel disc brakes, which typically have a firmer pedal feel. Another reason for pedal effort concerns could be improper
rotor finish. If the vehicle has had brake service which included rotor turning, this may be the reason.

CORRECTION:
A.

Pads

Lower pedal effort may be obtained by replacing the original pads with a new lining material:

Front Lining - P/N 18019507

Rear Lining - P/N 18019508

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

Note:

Owners should be told that some brake squeal may result from use of these new pads, especially in warm weather and during periods of
extended light usage. These pads should only be used for customers who want less brake pedal effort. DO NOT USE AS A GENERAL
REPLACEMENT PART.

Front Rotors

DO NOT TURN ROTORS FOR PAD REPLACEMENT.

If the front rotors on a high-pedal-effort vehicle have been previously turned, they should be replaced. It is not always apparent with visual
inspection whether a rotor has been turned. Rotor thickness should be measured with a micrometer. The thickness of a new rotor is 1.040" (26.4
mm). If a rotor measures 1.025" (26.0 mm) or less, the rotor probably has been turned and should be replaced.

Rear Brakes

Also, the rear calipers should be inspected for caliper slide function. If it takes additional force (greater than 50 lbs.) to move the caliper on the slide
sleeves, refer to Dealer Technical Bulletin 91-T-205 for the procedure to service the rear caliper slides.
