Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair
Removal/Installation
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Disconnect left side torque strut from engine.
3.
Separate throttle cable bracket from engine torque strut bracket and position aside. Do not remove cables.
4.
Remove engine torque strut bracket.
5.
Disconnect inlet and outlet hoses from pump.
6.
Remove serpentine belt guard as necessary.
7.
Remove belt from puller using 1/2 inch breaker bar.
8.
Remove rear bracket to pump bolts.
9.
On models except high output, remove rear bracket to transaxle bolts.
10.
On all models, remove rear bracket.
11.
Remove front bracket to engine bolt, then the pump assembly with bracket.
12.
Transfer pulley and bracket as necessary.
13.
Reverse procedure to install, then bleed power steering system as follows:
a. Turn wheels all the way to left.
b. Add power steering to Cold mark on fluid level indicator.
c. Start engine and run at fast idle, then add fluid, if necessary, to bring level to Cold mark.
d. Bleed system by turning wheels from side to side without hitting stops. Keep fluid level at Cold mark.
e. Return wheels to center position and continue running engine for 2-3 minutes.
f.
Road test vehicle to ensure steering functions normally and is free of noise.
g. Check fluid level and ensure level is at Hot mark after system has stabilized at its normal operating temperature.
