Brake Drum: Adjustments

J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge
1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange in order to insure proper balance upon reassembly.
4. Remove the brake drum. Mark the relationship of the drum to the axle flange in order to ensure proper balance upon reassembly.
5. Measure the drum Inside Diameter (ID) using the J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge.
6. Turning the wheel star, adjust the shoe and lining diameter to 0.76 mm (0.030 in) less than the inside diameter for each rear wheel.
7. Install the drums and wheels, aligning them to the previous marks.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Tighten the wheel nuts.
10. Apply the brake pedal 30-35 times.
Wait one second between each application in order to self-adjust the drum to shoe clearance.
