Oil Filter and Seal Replacement (Changing Oil and Filter)
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting..
2. Place the drain pan under the transmission oil pan (2).
3. Remove the oil pan bolts from the front and sides only.
4. Loosen the rear oil pan bolts approximately 4 turns.
NOTICE: Pry the oil pan down carefully in order to prevent damage to the transmission case or the oil pan sealing surfaces.
5. Lightly tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet or pry in order to allow the oil to drain.
6. Inspect the oil color. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure (Color, Level, Condition).
7. Remove the remaining oil pan bolts, oil pan (2), and gasket (1).
8. Remove the oil filter (4) and the O-ring (5).
9. Ensure that the O-ring is not stuck in the case.
10. Clean the transmission case and the oil pan gasket surfaces with solvent and air dry. Remove all traces of old gasket material.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Coat the seal with a small amount of J 36850 or equivalent.
2. Install the new seal (5) into the case.
3. Install the new filter (4) into the case.
4. Install the oil pan (2) and the new gasket (1).
5. Install the oil pan bolts.
6. Inspect the bolts and washers.
7. Use adhesive compound GM P/N 12345382 or equivalent in order to reduce the potential for oil leaks on the indicated bolt.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON(R) III oil.
10. Adjust the cold oil level reading for initial fill. Do not overfill. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure (Oil Level Check).
