Torque Converter Clutch: Description and Operation
The Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) system uses controls that are internal as well as external to the transmission.
Internal Control Components of the TCC System

Auxiliary Valve Body - Contains the TCC control valve. The control valve determines the method of oil feed to the torque converter assembly in
order to enable or disable the clutch mechanism.

Second Gear Switch - Closes when the transmission is in second gear in order to complete the electrical circuit of the TCC solenoid to the PCM.
This switch also has a second set of contacts that is normally closed and opens in second gear. This is for a second gear signal circuit that is
monitored by the PCM.

Shift Solenoids - Energize in order to redirect oil to the appropriate shift valve.

TCC Pule-Width Modulated Solenoid - Acts with the TCC regulator valve in order to control the apply and release feel of the TCC.

TCC Solenoid Assembly - Energizes in order to redirect the transmission oil to the converter clutch control valve in the auxiliary control valve
assembly.

Third Gear Switch - Normally closed and will open in third gear. The third gear switch is used for third gear signal circuit on torque management
applications.
The External Control Components of the TCC System

Brake Release Switch - In order to avoid stalling the engine when braking, the converter clutch is released any time the brakes are applied.

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor - Sends engine coolant temperature information to the Powertrain Control Module.

MAP Sensor - Sends engine vacuum (load) information to the Powertrain Control Module.

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) - Receives input signals and grounds the TCC solenoid in order to apply the clutch when proper operating
conditions are met.

Throttle Position Sensor - Sends throttle position information to the PCM.
^
Vehicle Speed Sensor - Sends vehicle speed information to the PCM.
