Flushing and Recycling the Cooling System
FLUSHING AND RECYCLING THE COOLING SYSTEM
Important:

To familiarize yourself with the equipment available through the GM Dealer Equipment program that is needed to more accurately and
efficiently flush and fill the engine cooling system refer to the appropriate Dealer Bulletin.
The Ethylene Glycol/Water fill ratios in the figure have been established to ensure a minimum of 50% Ethylene Glycol in the coolant mixture following
the recommended coolant flush, recycle and drain procedure, and that all engine block drains and air bleeds were
The coolant recovery reservoir capacity is 1.0 L (1.1 Qt.) to the "COLD" mark on the reservoir. The quantities listed in figure include the additional
quantity to displace the air remaining in the coolant system after a static refill.
Using the fill ratio in figure and the following procedures will ensure a minimum concentration of 50% Ethylene Glycol in the coolant system and
simplify the customer fill task.

Every two years or 30,000 miles whichever first occurs, the cooling system should be drained, recycled and filled using the following
recommended procedures:
Flushing
Tool Required: Non-Aqueous Coolant Exchanger such as (Pro Fill) J 75010-KM (Available in the GM Dealer Equipment program)
If your State/Local environmental enforcement group does not allow the discharge of coolant or if you do not desire to put used coolant into the
environment there are various methods and equipment that can be used to flush the coolant system. If using special equipment such as a back flusher,
follow the manufacturer's instructions. However, the thermostat should be removed before flushing the system.
Engine Coolant Recycling
Tool Required: GM approved Recycling System such as (Pro Clean) Available in the GM Dealer Equipment program. Refer to appropriate service
bulletin above.
As the need arises to conduct cooling system maintenance or repairs, all of the used coolant must be removed and replaced with qualified new or
recycled coolant. If only the radiator is drained, up to 40% of the used contaminated, coolant can remain in the cooling system. Used coolant removal
(from the vehicle) can be accomplished by several methods:

Utilize waterless, coolant evacuation system available in the GM Dealer Equipment program (or equivalent) which removes the used coolant
and replaces it with approved new or recycled coolant.

Utilize a GM approved coolant recycling system available in the GM Dealer Equipment program (or equivalent) which recycles the coolant on
the vehicle thereby eliminating the need for evacuating.

Recover used coolant and store in a used coolant holding tank and submit the used coolant for recycling on a regular basis.
