Pulling Spring End Into Shoe Slot

Using J 38400, pull end of retractor spring (9) up and rest on web of brake shoe.
^
Using J 38400, pull end of retractor 5 ring over until it snaps in slot in brake shoe.
5. Install park brake lever (7) to park brake shoe and lining assembly (8).
6. Install parking brake cable to park brake lever (7), if disconnected.
Adjuster Screw Assembly
7. Apply brake lubricant P/N 1052196 or equivalent to the adjusting screw (4) threads, inside diameter of socket (3) and socket face.

Adequate lubrication is achieved when a continuous bead of lubricant is at open end of pivot nut (5) and socket (3) when threads are fully
engaged.
8. Install adjusting screw assembly and adjuster shoe and lining assembly.

Engage adjuster nut end of adjusting screw assembly with web of park brake shoe and lining and park brake lever.
^
Position adjuster shoe and lining so that shoe web engages the deep slot in socket end of adjusting screw assembly.
9. Install retractor spring (9) into adjuster shoe and lining assembly (6).
^
Using J 38400, pull end of retractor spring (9) up and rest on web of brake shoe.
^
Using J 38400, pull end of retractor spring over until it snaps in slot in brake shoe.
10. Install adjuster actuator (2).
^
Lubricate tab and pivot point on adjuster lever with P/N 1052196 or equivalent brake lubricant.
^
Using J 38400, spread brake shoes while working adjuster actuator into position.
11. Install actuator spring (1).
^
Engage U shaped end of spring in hole in web of park brake shoe.
^
Using J 38400, stretch spring and engage loop end over tab on adjuster actuator.
INSPECT
Check the following to insure proper positioning and function of the adjuster actuator.
^
Adjuster actuator pivot in shoe web slot.
^
Notch in adjuster actuator on step in adjusting screw notch.
^
Arm of adjuster actuator resting freely on star wheel teeth of adjuster screw, not trapped under teeth in a downward angle.
^
Install J 38400 between upper ends of shoe and lining assemblies (6 & 8). Spread shoes apart and watch for proper rotation of star wheel.
12. Install brake drums, aligning marks made at removal.
13. Adjust brakes. Refer to Brake Shoe/Adjustments.See: Adjustments
