Oil Pressure Gauge: Testing and Inspection
The engine oil pressure is displayed by the OIL PRESSURE GAGE. The pointer of the gage is moved by two coils and its operation is similar to that of
the FUEL GAGE.
The OIL PRESSURE SENDER is connected to the junction of the two coils. It has low resistance when the oil pressure is low and 90 ohms resistance
when the oil pressure is high. This changing resistance changes the current flow through the coils. The magnetic fields of the coils move the pointer
from Low to High.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If the OIL PRESSURE GAGE does not read correctly:
1.
Remove the connector and the TAN wire from the OIL PRESSURE SENDER.
2.
Clip one lead of the KMJ-33431-A or equivalent tester to the TAN wire connector and one lead to ground.
3.
Put the IGNITION SWITCH in the "Run" position.
4.
Set the resistance controls on the tester to 4 ohms. Gage reads L.
5.
Set the resistance controls to 90 ohms. Gage reads H.
6.
If the gage does not read correctly disconnect the tester and check the TAN wire for battery voltage. If it is present the wiring is good. Install a
new OIL PRESSURE GAGE.
7.
If the gage reads correctly, install a new OIL PRESSURE SENDER.
