Temperature Gauge: Customer Interest
Instruments - Inoperative Temperature Gauge
Group Ref.: Chassis/Body Electrical
Bulletin No.: 338121
Date: November, 1993
SUBJECT:
INOPERATIVE TEMPERATURE GAUGE (REMOVE RESISTOR)
MODELS:
1994 BUICK CENTURY
1994 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS CIERA WITH 3.1L ENGINE
(RPO L82 -VIN M)
CONDITION:
Some owners may comment on the temperature gauge being inoperative.
CAUSE:
The temperature gauge circuit used a resistor wired into the wire harness to calibrate the temperature gauge. The engine heat may cause this resistor to
crack, resulting in an open circuit, and an inoperative temperature gauge.
Testing has determined that this resistor is no longer needed, and it was taken out of the harness after August 8, 1993, at both the Oklahoma City and
Ramos Arizpe assembly plants.
CORRECTION:
Locate the resistor by opening the harness conduit in the area shown in the illustration. With the ignition "off", cut the resistor out of the harness and
discard. Solder the two harness ends together, and seal the connection with heat shrink tubing. Put the wire back into the conduit. The temperature gauge
should now operate normally.
