Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then drain engine oil.
2.
Remove oil pan as outlined under OIL PAN.
3.
Remove rear main bearing cap, then oil seal from bearing cap.
4.
Using suitable tool, gently pack upper seal into groove until tight.
5.
Repeat step 3 for other end of seal.
6.
Measure the amount that was driven in on one side and add 1/16 inch. Using a suitable cutting tool, cut this length from the old rear main bearing
cap lower seal using the main bearing cap as a guide. Repeat this step for the other end of seal.
7.
Place piece of cut seal into groove of seal installer tool guide and install tool guide onto engine block.
8.
Using seal packing tool, drive piece of seal into block. Drive seal in until packing tool contacts machined stop.
9.
Remove tool guide and repeat steps 6 and 7 for other end of seal.
10.
Install new seal in bearing cap.
11.
Install rear main bearing cap. Apply a thin film of sealant No. 1052357 or equivalent to rear main bearing cap and case interface. Use care not to
allow sealant to contact crankshaft journal or main bearing.
