Valve Lifter Bleed Down

    If the intake manifold has been removed and if any rocker arms have been removed or loosened, it will be necessary to remove those lifters,
disassemble them, drain the oil from them and reassemble. Refer to ``Valve Lifters, Service.'' 
    If the intake manifold has not been removed, but rocker arms have been loosened or removed, the valve lifters must be bled down to prevent possible
valve to piston interference by using the following procedure:

1.

Prior to installing rocker arms, rotate crankshaft pulley to a position 32° BTDC (before top dead center). This is approximately 2 inches
counterclockwise from 0° pointer.

2.

If the right side valve cover was removed only, remove cylinder No. 1 glow plug and determine if No. 1 piston is in the correct position, this can
be determined by compression pressure.

3.

If the left side valve cover was removed only, rotate crankshaft until No. 5 cylinder intake valve pushrod is .28 inch above the No. 5 cylinder
exhaust valve pushrod.

4.

If removed, install cylinder No. 5 pivot and rocker arms. Alternately torque the bolts until the intake valve begins to open and stop tightening. 
When torquing rocker arms, use only hand wrenches to prevent engine damage.

5.

Install remaining rocker arms except No. 3 exhaust valve. Torque bolt to 28 ft. lbs.

6.

If removed, install No. 3 exhaust rocker arm and pivot, but do not torque beyond the point that the valve would be fully opened. This is indicated
by a strong resistance while turning the pivot retaining bolt. Going beyond this point would bend the pushrod. While performing step 6, torque
bolt slowly allowing the lifter to bleed down.

7.

Finish torquing No. 5 rocker arm pivot bolt slowly, allowing valve lifter to bleed down. Do not torque beyond the point that the valve would be
fully opened. This is indicated by a strong resistance while turning the pivot retaining bolt. Going beyond this point would bend the pushrod.

8.

Do not turn the crankshaft for at least 45 minutes while lifters bleed down. Do not rotate the engine until the valve lifters have bled down,
otherwise engine damage might occur.
