Audible Warning Device: Component Tests and General Diagnostics
General Information
The audio alarm system brings the driver's attention to one or more of several conditions:
1. Lamps are on, ignition switch is set to "LOCK," "OFF" or 'ACCY," and driver's door is open;
2. Ignition key is in ignition switch and is set to "LOCK," "OFF," or "ACCY," and driver's door is open;
3. Safety belt is unbuckled and ignition switch is in "RUN," "BULB TEST," or "START;" and
4. A turn signal is left on and vehicle has traveled over 1.2 km (3/4 mile);
5. Park brake has been left engaged and either vehicle has traveled approximately 50 feet (indicators cluster) or vehicle is shifted out of "PARK" or
"NEUTRAL" (gages and digital clusters). The Multi-Function Chime (MFC) module is also used as the audible alarm for the reminder package
(Y67).
Voltage is applied at all times through I/P Fuse Block Fuse 9C to Multi-Function Chime (MFC) module terminal Al to power the module. Voltage is
applied at all times through I/P Fuse Block Fuse 6C to the head/park lamp switch. Voltage is applied through the head/park lamp switch in "OFF" to the
lamps off input of the module.
With the ignition switch in "RUN," "BULB TEST," or "START," voltage is applied through I/P Fuse Block Fuse 1D to module terminal A3.
Lamps on Chime
If the LH front door is open and the Multi-Function Chime (MFC) module does not sense voltage at the lamps off input (terminal AS) and there is no
voltage at the ignition on input (terminal A3), the fast-pulsed lamps on chime is sounded.
Key In Ignition Chime
The key in ignition chime is sounded with the key in ignition switch and the driver's door open. When the ignition key warning switch and the LH front
door lock assembly switch are closed, the Multi-Function Chime (MFC) module senses ground at the key in ignition and the medium-pulsed chime is
sounded.
Fasten Belts Chime
With ignition switch in "RUN," "BULB TEST," or "START," voltage is applied through I/P Fuse Block Fuse I/P to the Multi-Function (MFC) module
terminal A3. With the driver's safety belt unbuckled, module terminal A4 is grounded through the safety belt switch, and the FASTEN BELTS indicator
lights for 4 to 8 seconds.
The fasten belts chime sounds for 4 to 8 seconds if driver's safety belt is unbuckled and ignition switch is turned to "RUN," "BULB TEST," or
"START." If driver's safety belt is buckled when the ignition switch is turned to "RUN," "BULB TEST," or "START," there is no chime, but the
FASTEN BELTS indicator lights for 4 to 8 seconds.
Turn Signal on Chime
When a turn signal is operated, the Multi-Function Chime (MFC) module begins to monitor vehicle distance. If the turn signal is still flashing after the
vehicle has traveled 1.2km (3/4 mile), the turn signal on chime sounds.
General Information
For Oldsmobile the Multi-function Chime (MFC) control module is located on the multi-use bracket behind the I/P Compartment. The MFC module has
no audible output. For all chime warnings, the MFC control module grounds Terminal B6. This signals the MFC module to sound a chime. The MFC
control module provides the following warnings:

The Buick reminder package consists of indicators only. The following indicators are included in the reminder package:

Hi Coolant Temperature Warning
The coolant temperature sensor determines when the engine coolant is too hot and signals the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) at terminal C3/F13.
The PCM then grounds Multi-Function Chime (MFC) control module Terminal B5 and the TEMP Indicator in the Instrument Cluster. A fast-pulsed
chime sounds briefly and the TEMP Indicator lights and stays on even after the chime stops. The ignition switch provides a bulb check of the TEMP
Indicator when the ignition switch is in "BULB TEST" or "START."
LO Oil Pressure Warning
When the oil pressure is low. Multi-function Chime (MFC) control module Terminal B8 is grounded. If the voltage at Terminal A4, engine running
input, is above 5.1 volts, a fast-pulsed chime sounds and the OIL Indicator lights the Instrument Cluster.
