in FRONT SUSPENSION and/or STRUT REPLACEMENT in REAR SUSPENSION.

A noise such as a grunt or squeal after completing one to three full strokes in both directions. Replace the strut. Refer to STRUT, STRUT
COMPONENT AND/OR SPRING REPLACEMENT in FRONT SUSPENSION and/or STRUT REPLACEMENT in REAR SUSPENSION.
^
A clicking noise at fast reversal. Replace the strut. Refer to STRUT, STRUT COMPONENT AND/OR SPRING REPLACEMENT in FRONT
SUSPENSION and/or STRUT REPLACEMENT in REAR SUSPENSION.
^
Fluid leakage. Replace the strut. Refer to STRUT, STRUT COMPONENT AND/OR SPRING REPLACEMENT in FRONT SUSPENSION
and/or STRUT REPLACEMENT in REAR SUSPENSION.
Struts or Shock Absorbers Leak
1. Fully extend the strut (wheels unsupported) in order to expose the seal cover area for inspection.
2. Look for signs of leaks in the seal cover area:

A slight trace of fluid is not a cause for replacement.
^
The seal permits some seepage to lubricate the piston rod.
^
A built-in fluid reserve allows for seepage.
3. You can easily locate a leaking strut damper/shock because of the fluid around the seal cover and because of an excessive amount of fluid on the
strut.
4. Replace a leaking strut. Refer to STRUT, STRUT COMPONENT AND/OR SPRING REPLACEMENT in FRONT SUSPENSION and/or
STRUT REPLACEMENT in REAR SUSPENSION.
Struts or Shock Absorbers Noisy
1. Check all the mounting for proper torque (bolt and/or nut). A loose mounting causes noise.
2. Jounce the vehicle to isolate the suspected unit if all the mountings are intact.
3. Quickly push down (jouncing) and then lift up on the corner of the bumper that is nearest to the strut cartridge being checked to test each strut
cartridge.
4. If practical, ride with the owner to be sure that you understand the complaint, before proceeding to the next step.
5. Stroke the strut damper to detect other objectionable noises.
6. Any sound other than hissing is abnormal.
7. Replace the strut if an abnormal sound occurs. Refer to STRUT, STRUT COMPONENT and/or SPRING REPLACEMENT in FRONT
SUSPENSION AND/OR STRUT REPLACEMENT in REAR SUSPENSION.
8. Adjust the alignment as necessary.
Struts or Shock Absorbers Weak
1. Check the tire pressures. Refer to TIRE PLACARD DESCRIPTION.
2. Note the load conditions under which the vehicle is normally operated.
3. If practical, ride with the owner to be sure that you understand the complaint before proceeding to the next step.
4. Test each strut by quickly pushing down (jouncing) and then lifting up on the corner of the bumper that is nearest to the strut being checked.
5. Use the same amount of effort on each test and note the resistance on both compression and rebound.
6. Compare the results with a similar vehicle that has an acceptable ride quality.
7. Both struts should provide the same feeling of resistance.

Inspect for the following conditions:

Inspect for signs of vehicle abuse.

Inspect for signs of vehicle overloading.
^
Inspect for wear to the strut.
^
Inspect for damage to the strut.
^
Inspect for wear to the shock absorbers.
^
Inspect for damage to the shock absorbers.
^
Inspect for broken springs.
^
Inspect for sagging springs.
^
Inspect for mispositioned springs.
Noise In the Front End
Inspect for the following conditions:

Inspect for wear or damage to the suspension components.
^
Inspect for wear or damage to the control arm bushings.
