WHEEL REFINISHING SERVICE PROCEDURE
CAUTION: To avoid serious personal injury when applying any two part component paint system, follow the specific precautions provided
by the paint manufacturer. Failure to follow these precautions may cause lung irritation and allergic respiratory reaction.
1. Remove the tire and wheel from the vehicle. Refer to WHEEL REMOVAL.
2. Dismount the tire from the wheel. Refer to TIRE MOUNTING AND DISMOUNTING
3. Remove the valve stem from the wheel.
4. Remove the balance weights.
5. Use a suitable remover to wipe the following from the wheel.

Wipe the excess grease from the wheel.

Wipe the excess wax from the wheel.
^
Wipe the excess dirt from the wheel.
Important: Do not use chemical strippers. Do not remachine the aluminum wheels.
6. Plastic media blast the wheels in order to remove old paint or clearcoat.
7. Mask off the wheels mounting surface and lug nut contact surfaces. These areas must remain free of paint/clearcoat.
8. Light sanding of the wheel, while manually spinning it, may also be done to restore the circular machined appearance.
9. Refer to and follow the individual painting formula and process provided by the manufacturer of each specific paint system.
10. Unmask the wheel.
11. Install a new valve stem.
12. Clean all wheel mounting surfaces of any corrosion, overspray or dirt.
13. Install the tire to the wheel. Refer to TIRE MOUNTING AND DISMOUNTING
14. Rebalance the tire and wheel new coated wheel weights.
15. Install the tire and wheel to the vehicle. Refer to WHEEL INSTALLATION.
Clearcoat Damage to Aluminum Wheels
Mount the wheel on a brake lathe and spin slowly. Sand the wheel with a backing block or a pad. Hold the abrasive flat against the surface of the wheel.
Move slowly back and forth from the center to the outer edge of the wheel in order to remove imperfections.
Important: Do not use abrasives coarser than 80 grit.

Sand with 80 grit.

Sand with 150 grit.
^
Sand with 240 grit.
SLIGHT CLEAR COAT DAMAGE ON UNPAINTED WHEELS
CAUTION: Use of eye goggles is necessary to prevent personal injury.
1. Remove the original clear coating.
1.1. Apply a chemical stripper to the wheel surface and allow the chemical to penetrate the coating. Remove the stripper following the
manufacturer's recommendations.
1.2. Rinse the wheel surface thoroughly with clean water.
CAUTION: Do not use vehicle power to rotate the wheel while sanding to avoid personal injury.
2. Remove the surface oxidation. Sand the wheel with 240 grit (wet or dry) while rotating the wheel on a slow spinning brake lathe, or by mounting it
on the vehicle and spinning the wheel by hand. This should restore the machined appearance and promote adhesion.
Aluminum Wheel Recoating Procedure
1. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to WHEEL REMOVAL.
CAUTION: Use of rubber gloves and eye protection is necessary to prevent personal injury.
2. Clean the surface of contaminants by washing with soap and water.
3. Spray the wheel with Amchem number-33 or equivalent.

Let the wheel soak for 1 to 3 minutes.

Rinse the wheel with water and blow dry.
4. Soak the wheel with Amchem #1001 or equivalent.

Let the wheel soak for 1 to 3 minutes.
^
Rinse the wheel with water and blow dry.
5. Mask off the tire.
