ABS Light: Description and Operation
The "ABS" indicator lamp is located in the instrument cluster and will illuminate if a malfunction in the ABS is detected by the Electronic Brake (and
Traction) Control Module (EBCM/EBTCM). The "ABS" indicator informs the driver that a condition exists which results in turning "OFF" the
"Antilock" brake and "Traction Control" function. If only the "ABS" lamp is on, normal braking with full power assist is available. If the "BRAKE" and
"ABS" lamps are on, a problem may exist in the hydraulic brake system. Conditions for the "ABS" lamp to turn "ON" are as follows:

When ignition switch is turned to "RUN" prior to starting the engine, the "ANTILOCK" lamp comes on for a short period of time, and then goes
out.

As engine is cranked, the red "BRAKE" and amber "ANTILOCK" lamps come on. When the key is returned to the "RUN" position, both lamps
will go off. Neither the red "BRAKE" warning lamp or the amber "ANTILOCK" indicator lamp should come on while the vehicle is being driven.

The "ANTILOCK" lamp will come on also when a malfunction in the ABS is detected by the control module. If only this lamp is on, normal
braking is available. However, if both the red "BRAKE" and amber "ANTILOCK" lamps are on during vehicle operation, something might be
wrong with the hydraulic brake system.
