Heads Up Display Unit: Description and Operation
General Description
HUD System Display Image
The Head-Up Display (HUD) system projects frequently used driver information near the front of the vehicle, as viewed from the driver seat. During
operation, information displayed by the HUD system includes: a digital speedometer with english/metric indicator, turn indicators, high beam indicator,
and a "CHECK GAGES" indicator.
NOTICE: For optimal HUD performance, a HUD specific windshield must be used whenever the windshield is replaced. If the correct windshield is
not used the image will be blurry.
The HUD system consists of a HUD specific windshield, the HUD control module and the HUD control/image adjuster switch. The HUD control unit is
connected to the instrument panel wiring harness and the HUD control/image adjuster switch is located in the headliner.
The HUD control module processes various inputs. Vehicle speed is sent as 4000 pulses per mile from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Turn
signal, high beam, check gages, km/h and mph status is sent as data through the Serial-Parallel Interface (SPI) from the I/P cluster. The HUD control
module then projects the resulting display image. The HUD control module also reduces the display image intensity when the park lamps or headlamps
are activated.
The HUD control switch varies the intensity of the display image, and uses an electrical switch to vary the vertical position of the display image through
a motor in the HUD module.
