    Rods and pistons should be assembled and installed as shown in Fig. 11.

    Measure connecting rod side clearance using a suitable feeler gauge. Clearance obtained should be .006-.023 for 1982-84 engines, or .003-.015 inch
for 1985-87 engines.
    Some 1982 V6-231 (Vin A) and V6-252 engines may exhibit engine noise just above idle with transmission in gear. The noise can best be
described as a light ticking sound, similar to overhead valve noise, but appears to come from the bottom portion of the engine and is most
pronounced at the rear of the front wheel opening. This noise may be caused by excessive side clearance between the connecting rod and the 
crankshaft journal thrust surfaces on the number one, three or five cylinder. The clearance should be checked using a dial indicator or feeler
gauge. If a feeler gauge is used, the gauge should be placed next to the thrust surface on the counterweight and not next to the thin wall section
between two adjacent rods. Make sure the feeler gauge is fully seated on the journal and not on top of the narrow raised thrust surface.
Clearance measurements should be made at several places around the journal. If rod clearance exceeds .015 inch on the above mentioned
cylinders, the rod should be replaced. A new rod, Part No. 25516444, is available which is .010 inch thicker than the original. The new rod will
reduce the clearance to the low side of the specified limits.
