Fuel Pump Diagnosis

Fuel Pump Pressure Test

1. Disconnect fuel line at carburetor and connect a suitable pressure gage (such as Pressure-Leakdown Tester J-22109 or equivalent). On diesel

engines, disconnect the fuel line between the fuel pump and the fuel filter on the engine.

2. On all but the V6 diesel, start the engine and run at slow idle (using the fuel in the carburetor or injection pump).

3. If pump is operating properly, the pressure should be 37.9 to 44.8 kPa (5-1/2 to 6-1/2 P.S.I.) constant. If pressure is too high or too low or varies

materially at different engine speeds, the pump should be replaced.

3a. V6 Diesel - If pump is operating properly, the pressure should be 40 to 60 kPa (5.8 to 8.7 P.S.I.). If pressure is too high or too low or varies

materially, the pump should be replaced.

Fuel Pump Flow Test

1. Disconnect fuel line from carburetor. On diesel engines, disconnect the fuel line between the fuel pump and the fuel filter located near the injection

pump. Run fuel line into a suitable measuring container.

2. While observing the sweep second hand of a clock or watch, run the engine at idle until there is one pint of fuel in the container. One pint should

be pumped in 30 seconds or less.

3. If flow is below minimum, check for restriction in the line.

3a. On the V6 diesel, turn the ignition switch to "Run".
