Information
Powertrain Engineering has developed improved valve stem seals for 3800 Series II engines. The improved valve stem seals supersede original
equipment type seals and therefore are the only replacement seals available from SPO. Valve seal installation tool J 42863 (blue color) has been
developed to properly install the improved seals. Tool J 41512 (black color) will not install the new style seals properly and should be discarded. Tool J
42863 is an essential tool and will automatically be shipped to appropriate dealers/retailers via Kent-Moore company beginning June 19, 1997.
Valve Seal Installer J 42863 Service Procedure
1.
Lubricate the valve guide tower and valve stem with motor oil before installing the service seals.
2.
Start valve seal on the valve stem with a twisting motion and push the seal down until the rubber jacket touches the top of the guide.
3.
Place tool J 42863 over the valve seal (flat surface toward valve seal).
4.
Tap the top (tapered end) of J 42863 with a plastic mallet until the seal is resting flush on top of the valve guide. Repeat the tapping procedure a
second time to insure that the seal is seated properly.
