Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Removal
Front Cover
Tools Required:
J 37096 Flywheel Holding Tool
J 38197 Crankshaft Balancer Puller
J 28467 Engine Support Fixture
J 38854 Lift Bracket
J 36660 Torque Angle Meter
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Torque axis mount.
2. Drive belt(s).
3. Crankshaft balancer with J 38197 or equivalent.
4. Sensor shield.
5. Crankshaft sensor.
6. Oil pan to front cover bolts.
7. Front cover attaching bolts and cover.
8. Inspect:

Timing chain for overall "in and out" movement. Should not exceed 25 mm (one inch).

Sprockets for wear.
9. Clean gasket mating surfaces at timing chain cover, and cylinder block.

If oil pan gasket is excessively swollen, the oil pan must be removed and the gasket replaced.
