Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

1.

Remove oil pan and oil pump.

2.

Remove rear main bearing cap.

3.

Using tool J-21526-2, drive upper seal into groove approximately 1/4 inch.

Repeat step 3 for other end of seal.

5.

Measure the amount that was driven in on one side and add 1/16 inch. Cut this length from lower seal removed from lower cap.

6.

Repeat step 5 for other end of seal.

7.

Place piece of cut seal into groove of seal installer tool J-21526-1 and install tool guide onto block.

8.

Using seal packing tool J-21526-2, drive piece of seal into place. Drive seal in until tool contacts machined stop.

9.

Remove tool guide and repeat steps 7 and 8 for other end of seal.

10.

Install replacement seal in bearing cap as follows:

a. Ensure that cap mating surfaces, seal grooves and side seal channels are clean and free from old seal material.
b. Soak sealing strips in kerosene or light oil for 5 minutes and apply GM sealer 1052621, Loctite 414 or equivalent to seal groove in cap.
c. Within 1 minute after applying sealer, roll seal into groove using installer J-28693, pressing seal into groove until seal projects no more than

1/16 inch above each mating surface of cap.

d. Holding seal in place, cut seal flush with mating surfaces of cap using tool sharp enough to produce clean cut.
e. Apply thin film of chassis grease to seal surface and thin film of suitable sealer to cap mating surfaces. Do not allow sealer to contact

journal or bearing surfaces.

11.

Install side seals in cap, position bearing cap in block ensuring that cap is properly seated, then torque cap bolts to specifications.

12.

Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation.
