Throttle Body: Service and Repair
Throttle Body Injection (TBI) Unit, Replace
REMOVAL
1. Raise hood and remove air cleaner assembly.
2. Relieve fuel system pressure as described under Fuel System Pressure Test.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors to idle air control, throttle position sensor and injector.
4. Disconnect throttle linkage, return spring, and cruise control linkage if so equipped.
5. Disconnect vacuum hoses from TBI unit.
6. Disconnect fuel supply and return lines at TBI unit. This will require use of back-up wrench to hold fuel inlet and outlet nuts on throttle body.
7. On 4-112 and 4-151 engine, remove three TBI unit-to-engine attaching bolts, then the TBI unit.
8. On 4-121 overhead valve engine, remove the two long air cleaner isolator-to-TBI unit attaching bolts and the isolator. Remove injector harness
and grommet from TBI unit, then the remaining attaching bolt and TBI unit.
INSTALLATION
1. Ensure TBI and intake manifold sealing surfaces are clean.
2. Position replacement TBI-to-intake manifold gasket on manifold.
3. Position TBI unit on intake manifold, then install 3 attaching bolts. Torque bolts to 13 ft. lbs. on 4-112 and 4-151 engine, or 17 ft. lbs. on 4-121
overhead valve engine.
4. Install fuel return line. Torque to 17 ft. lbs. Inspect fuel return line O-ring prior to installation. If O-ring shows signs of tears or wear, it
must be replaced.
5. Install fuel pressure line. On models equipped with banjo type connection, torque fitting to 21 ft. lbs. On models equipped with O-ring type fitting,
torque fitting to 17 ft. lbs. Inspect fuel pressure line O-ring or washers prior to installation. If O-ring (if equipped) shows signs of tears or
wear, it must be replaced. If washers (if equipped) and sealing surfaces are scratched or damaged in any way, they must be replaced.
6. Connect electrical connectors to idle air control, throttle position sensor and injector.
7. Connect throttle linkage, return spring and cruise control linkage (if equipped).
