NOISY SPEEDOMETER CABLE/NEEDLE OSCILLATION
MODELS:
1989 AND 1990 405 "S" AND "Mi16" VEHICLES
THIS BULLETIN SUPERCEDES SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 342 DATED MAY, 1989
COMPLAINT:
Some vehicles may exhibit a clicking noise in the speedometer drive system which can be accompanied by a slight vibration in the needle.
CORRECTION:
Installation of a new type cruise control speedsensor, relocated on the transmission housing, and a one-piece speedometer cable. These new components
will be installed in production on 1991 Model Year 405 vehicles.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
REMOVAL - On lift
-
Remove speedometer cable end from transmission by pulling out the rubber lock pin
-
Disengage the speedometer cable from the clip that holds it to the bracket OD the engine block and from the heater hose clip on "S" models
-
Remove speedometer drive housing and driven gear from transmission (11 mm hold-down bolt)
REMOVAL - Passenger compartment
-
Remove instrument cluster (refer to Body Equipmerit Workshop Manual, page H4.003)
-
Disconnect the speedsensor connector
-
Unscrew lower speedometer cable from speedsensor and remove upper and lower cables
REINSTALLATION - Passenger compartment
-
Install the new one-piece speedometer cable from inside the passenger compartment, making sure that the sealing ball on the speedometer
cable is correctly positioned in the firewall grommet; do not install cable on transmission side at this time

Attach speedometer cable to instrument cluster and reinstall cluster
-
Using a drift punch, remove one of the sealing plugs on the firewall grommet for the hood release cable (extreme left side of firewall)

Pull the grommet inside the vehicle
-
Route the two wires from the new adapter wiring harness through the firewall and grommet from engine compartment side; push the sleeve on
the wiring harness all the way down to the transmission side connector
-
Reinstall the hood release cable grommet into the firewall
-
Install the wire terminals into the two-pin connector provided with the adapter wiring harness by matching wire numbers with the original
speedsensor wiring harness and lock the tab on the two-pin connector:
Number M155 ground (green and yellow wire) to M155 Number 155 vehicle input speed wire to 155

Route the adapter wiring harness along the backside of the firewall insulator (underneath edge of grommets and switches) so it does not come
in contact with pedals in depressed position or with steering column

Plug in the two connectors
REINSTALLATION - On Lift

Install the original speedo driven pinion into the new CC speedsensor, or use pinion P/N 2649.13 (white color code) if customer is also
