Speedometer - Accuracy Problems
BULLETIN NO. 369
DATE:
December, 1989
SUBJECT:
SPEEDOMETER ACCURACY PROBLEMS
MODELS:
1989 405 SEDANS 1990 405 SPORTSWAGONS
COMPLAINT:
Speedometer registers slightly higher than actual vehicle speed. A typical customer complaint might be "at 64-65 MPH indicated on the speedometer, the
actual vehicle speed is only 60 MPH."
If you should encounter a complaint of this nature, proceed as follows:
1.
Verify speedometer accuracy between the measured mile markers that are visible on all major highways. Remember that at a constant speed of 60
MPH it takes 60 seconds to travel one mile. To accurately know the true speed over a measured mile for ally time taken, while maintaining a
constant speed, use the following simple formula:
3600 divided by time in secs. over a measured mile =
True speed in MPH
Examples:
1. 3600 divided by 72 secs. = 50 MPH
2.
3600 divided by 60 secs. = 60 MPH
2.
If the indicated speed (MPH) is more than 5% higher than the actual vehicle speed, install a 20-tooth speedo driven
pinion.
PART REQUIRED:
20-tooth Speedo Driven Pinion P/N 2649.13 (white color code)
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
-
Remove speedo cable end by pulling out the rubber lock pin and plastic drive housing (11 mm hold-down bolt) from
transmission
-

-
Reinstall cable end into speedometer gear and plastic housing; it may be necessary to rotate gear slightly for easier
engagement into cable. DO NOT FORCE PIECES TOGETHER.
