Axle Bearing: Service and Repair
Driveshaft

REMOVAL

1.

With the vehicle setting on the ground, remove the anti-sway bar retaining bolt.

2.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove the front wheels and drain the transmission.

Remove pin and cage nut off of spindle, then using socket tool No. 0606-AY or equivalent, remove halfshaft nut, Fig. 1. Do not use brakes to
loosen nut.

4.

Loosen retaining nut and remove lower ball joint.

5.

Remove wheel sensors if equipped.

Starting on RH side, loosen two nuts (6) on rear of bearing housing, Fig. 2, and rotate by a half turn to disengage offset head from bearing
housing.

7.

Turn steering wheel completely left, then remove steering knuckle to disengage halfshaft from hub.

8.

Remove halfshaft from differential and slide it through support bearing.

9.

Rotate steering wheel completely right, then remove steering knuckle to disengage halfshaft from hub.

10.

Remove halfshaft from differential. Do not rotate wheels while halfshafts are disconnected.

INSTALLATION

1.

Install a new oil seal in differential housing using seal installer tool No. 0317-G on left side and No. 0317-S, or equivalents, on right side, Fig. 3.
Fill area between two lips of seal with grease.

2.

Install protector on inner end of halfshaft bearing before installing.

3.

Reverse remainder of removal procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Remove and retain protectors after securing halfshaft bearing bolts.
b. Install and adjust speed sensors, if equipped.
