Radio - Static On AM Band When Braking

SUBJECT:
NOISE ON AM BAND OF RADIO WHEN BRAKING
MODELS:
1989 AND 1990 MODEL YEAR 405 VEHICLES
COMPLAINT:
Static on AM band, especially in fringe areas, when braking. Noise diminishes as the vehicle slows down, clearing up completely as it comes to a full
stop.
CAUSE:
An interference signal is generated between the front brake pads and rotors during braking.
CORRECTION:
Factory:
Ground wires will be installed in production on 1991MY vehicles.
Field Fix:
Install a ground wire on each front strut between the steering knuckle and the upper strut to body mounting studs.
PARTS REQUIRED:

8 mm eyelet terminals, P/N 6540.26

8 mm star washers, P/N 6958.60
2
Electrical wires, 12-14 gauge, cut to 32 inch lengths
4"
0.25" heat shrinkable tubing
PROCEDURE:
TO PREPARE THE GROUND WIRES:
-
Strip approximately 1/8" of insulation from each wire end

Cut the heat shrinkable tubing into 4 one-inch lengths; slide two pieces over each wire

To one end of each wire crimp the 8 mm eyelet
-
Crimp the 8 mm eyelet to the other end of each wire
-
Slide the heat shrinkable tubing over each terminal; crimp and shrink into place with a heat gun
TO INSTALL GROUND WIRES ON VEHICLE:

Raise vehicle on lift

Using a 13 mm socket, remove the bolt (1) that holds the brake hose support bracket to the spindle
