DIAGNOSIS OF INTERMITTENT POWER ANTENNA PROBLEMS

MODEL:

505'S EQUIPPED WITH HIRSCHMANN AUTA 6000 EL ANTENNA

INFORMATION

Testing of warranty returned antennas has shown that some are being replaced unjustifiably for complaints of constant current draw on the battery.

OPERATING PRINCIPLE

When the antenna is signaled by the ignition switch or radio to retract or extend the mast, the built-in electronic unit will allow current to flow to the
drive motor for 17 to 20 seconds.

A current draw of 2 to 3 amps for up to 20 seconds (on average 4 to 7 seconds), after the mast is fully retracted or extended, is a normal operating
condition. The current is then shut off. With the motor shut off the antenna should not draw more than 2mA (0.002A).

NOTE:

It is normal to find permanent battery voltage at the antenna supply wire 13E.

TESTING PROCEDURE

Preliminary conditions:
Permanent battery voltage at wire 13E Ground at wire M13 Battery voltage at wire 215 when ignition switch and radio are turned on
CHECKING

-

Disconnect 3 pin connector from antenna.

-

Remove wire 13E from connector.

-

Reconnect 3 pin connector.

-

Connect a multitester such as "Fluke 75" between wire 13E and open pin on antenna. (Select D.C. amp scale of tester)

Start engine and turn on radio:

Current draw will be 1 amp or less while the mast is moving up or down With the mast fully extended or retracted current will be 2 to 3 amps for up
to 20 seconds (average 4 to 7 seconds)

Repeat complete cycle 5 times, each time waiting between the extension and retraction of the mast to permit the antenna to go through its timed
current shut-off cycle.

Any intermittent problem will occur at least once within the 5 cycles.

The antenna should be replaced only if the electronic built-in unit fails to shut off current to the motor after 20 seconds.

Note:

When the mast is repeatedly extended and retracted the temperature within the antenna will rise to more than 85~C (185~F). In this case, the
built-in overload protection feature will switch the control unit off at any position of the mast. After a short cooling-off period the antenna will
be fully functional again and will automatically switch back on.
