Bulletin No. 103
Date:
January, 1983
Subject:
CONNECTION OF ALTERNATOR WIRE NO. 7A ON EARLY 1983 VEHICLES
On all 505 and 604 models with a V.I.N. within the range indicated
below:
-
505 Diesels:
332212 to 333209
(inclusive)
-
505 Gas: 332212 to 333958 (inclusive)
-
604 Diesels: 103001 to 103167 (inclusive) the connection between alternator wire 7A and the new charging system noise
suppressor may not be sufficient to provide positive locking of the terminals - the terminals may become disconnected after a
certain period of time and may thereafter render the alternator exciter circuit inoperative (no charge condition). Additionally,
the battery indicator in the instrument panel may also be rendered inoperative and the driver will not be alerted of a charging
system malfunction during normal operating conditions. Eventually the battery will become totally discharged. Indication of a
charging system problem can be detected by an observant driver while in the "ACCESSORY" or ignition "ON" position. In this
mode the battery indicator light will not come "ON" as it normally should.
Inspection and Modification Procedure:
All 505 and 604 models with a V.I.N. within the range indicated above, presently in your inventory or processed in your Service Department for P.D.I.
or routine maintenance, should be thoroughly checked for a secure connection by trying to disconnect wire 7A from the noise suppressor wire. If the
terminals become disconnected, proceed as follows:
-
Push soft insulating sleeve away from the male terminal on noise suppressor wire.
-
Reconnect terminals until they are positively locked.
-
Re-insert soft insulating sleeve over hard plastic insulator on wire 7A terminal.
