22-02-88 REVISION A
(C22-03)
This bulletin supersedes Technical Service Bulletin 22-02-88 which should be removed from your files. This bulletin revises Procedure A by adding two
additional diagnostic steps, and Procedure C with regard to vehicles equipped with aluminum wheels. This revision also adds a Tire Ordering
Information Worksheet to assure all necessary information has been gathered before calling for tire assistance.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Vehicle shake and/or steering wheel nibble/oscillation at 45-65 mph. The condition may feel worse when operating the vehicle on very smooth road
surfaces.
DIAGNOSIS
Road test the vehicle in the 45-65 mph speed range, preferably on a smooth blacktop road and verify the body shake or steering wheel oscillation.
REPAIR PROCEDURES
It will be necessary to assure that the tires are properly inflated, balanced, and within runout guidelines to correct the condition. In rare instances, it may
be necessary to replace the tires.
Procedure A
1.
Check tire pressure in each tire and adjust as necessary. Higher than recommended tire pressures promote vehicle shake due to the increase in
radial force variation.
2.
Check front hub for axial play and rear axle shaft for end play and correct as necessary.
3.
Check steering wheel free play and adjust as necessary.
4.
Check the tire/wheel assemblies for damaged and/or bent wheels. Replace any damaged tires or wheels. Check tire and wheel run-out and correct
as required.
5.
Balance the tire and wheel assemblies on a properly calibrated off-car wheel balancer. (Refer to the balance machine instructions for checking
machine calibration and wheel balancing procedures.)
Procedure B
If the condition is not corrected using Steps 1 through 5, then it may be necessary to finish-balance the tires and wheels on the vehicle to assure that the
total rotating assemblies (tires, wheels, brake drums/rotors, etc.) are in balance.
Procedure C
If the shake or steering wheel oscillation still occurs, it will be necessary to replace the two front tires with new Yokohama "Y382E" tires, product code
382-1870-14 PEWL. These tires can be identified by the "Y382E" molded on the serial number side (inside) of the tire just above the bead seating ring,
