W/4 WHEEL DRIVE
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle.
2. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly, then the brake drum.
3. Remove three bolts securing drive axle to companion flange, then disconnect drive axle.
4. Remove companion flange nut and washer.
5. Using suitable axle puller, remove axle shaft from inner arm.
6. Remove inner arm from rear suspension.
7. Using suitable press, remove dust covers and wheel bearings from axle shaft and inner arm.
8. Install replacement outer dust cover on axle shaft using suitable tool and plastic hammer. Install dust cover with concave side facing towards
companion flange side of axle shaft.
9. Apply suitable grease to outer bearing seal inner lip circumference, the install outer bearing with suitable press. Install bearing with seal surface
facing companion flange side of axle shaft.
10. Using suitable press, install replacement inner bearing in inner arm, then using suitable seal installer and plastic hammer, install replacement oil
seal.
11. Press axle shaft into inner arm.
12. Assemble axle housing.
13. Measure axle axial endplay with dial indicator. If endplay exceeds 0.031 inch, replace bearing.
Axle Shaft Cleaning and Inspection
REMOVAL
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then drain differential lubricant.
2. Remove axle shaft to companion flange attaching bolts, then on Colt Vista Models, remove axle shaft from differential by prying with screwdriver.
On Conquest models, use suitable axle puller to remove axle from differential.
3. If necessary, renew axle shaft oil seal.
