SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some Dodge Colt vehicles equipped with a 1.5L engine may exhibit a hesitation, surge, stumble, or driveway dieout within the first 60 seconds after a
cold start.

DIAGNOSIS:

Using the DRB II tester and the 1989 Powertrain Diagnostic Manual for 1.5/1.6L/1.6 Turbo (Publication # 81-699-9018), verify that all vehicle systems
are functioning as designed. If no fault codes are present, proceed with the following repair.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This procedure involves cleaning several engine components of oil and carbon deposits, and the installation of a new style valve cover.

Confirm the air flow sensor identification number (E5T01571) as marked on the side of the air flow sensor (Figure 1) . Inspect the air passage of
the sensor and verify that one of the air by-pass holes is plugged.  If both of the by-pass holes are open, the air flow sensor must be replaced using
the correct sensor, PN MD118125.

Clean any oil and/or carbon deposits from the air flow sensor, air intake hose, throttle body, air intake plenum and intake manifold.

3.

Using a DRB II and the Diagnostic Procedure Manual, check the fuel injectors for proper operation. Replace, if necessary.

4.

With the air intake plenum and intake manifold removed from the engine, check intake valves for carbon deposits. If carbon deposits are heavy
(more than a light coating on valves), the valves should be cleaned. The suggested method for cleaning involves the removal of the cylinder head
from the engine. The cylinder head should be disassembled, and the valves cleaned using a wire brush.

5.

Inspect and clean the spark plugs of any carbon deposits.

6.

Install the new style rocker cover, PN MD168907. This cover has been redesigned to improve air flow and prevent oil spill over into the air
cleaner.
