1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove dust cap from brake drum, then remove cotter pin and adjusting nut retainer.
3. Torque wheel bearing adjusting nut to 14 lb-ft, and rotate drum several turns to seat bearings, then loosen adjusting nut.
4. Torque adjusting nut to 7 lb-ft, rotate drum several times, then retorque nut to 7 lb-ft.
5. Install nut retainer and cotter pin. If cotter pin holes are not aligned reposition retainer. If holes cannot be aligned, the adjusting nut may be backed
off a maximum of 15° to align holes.
6. Install dust cap on brake drum, then install wheel and tire assembly.

NOTE: Adjustment of the outer bearing retainer is required when axle shaft or wheel bearing are replaced, but not required when axle shaft are
removed and reinstalled without replacement of components.
1. Install axle shaft into axle housing without installing packings and shims.
2. Temporarily tighten nuts until bearing outer race comes in close contact with axle housing.
3. Measure clearance between axle housing and backing plate.
4. Using chart determine number and thickness of packing and shims to be used.
5. Install axle shaft assembly.
