Removal

1. Remove closed ventilation and evaporation control systems.
2. Remove rocker arm cover.
3. Remove rocker shaft bolts and retainers.
4. Lift off rocker arms and shaft.

Inspection

Clean all parts with a suitable solvent. Be sure the inside of the shaft is clean and the oil holes are open. The drilled oil hole in the bore of the rocker
arm must be open to the trough and valve end of the arms. The trough also feeds oil to the adjusting screw and pushrod.

The shaft should be free from excessive wear in arm contact areas. The shaft should be smooth in retainer contact areas. The adjusting screws in the
rocker arms should have a uniform round end. The drag torque should be smooth and uniform. The retainers should be smooth and undamaged in the
shaft contact area.

Assembly & Installation

1. Referring to Fig. 5, note position of oil hole on forward end of shaft which denotes the upper side of shaft. Rocker arms must be put on the shaft

with the adjusting screw to the right side of the engine. Place one of the small retainers on the one long bolt and install the bolt in the rear hole in
the shaft from the top side.

2. Install one rocker arm and one spacer; then two rocker arms and a spacer. Continue in same sequence until all rocker arms and spacers are on the

shaft.

3. Place a bolt and small retainer in front hole in shaft.
4. Place a bolt and the one wide retainer through the center hole in the shaft with six rocker arms on each side of center.
5. Install remaining bolts and retainers.
6. Locate the assembly on the cylinder head and position rocker arm adjusting screws in pushrods.
7. Tighten bolts finger tight, bringing retainers in contact with the shaft between rocker arms.
8. Tighten bolts to specified torque.
9. Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation.
