Idle Speed: Adjustments
Idle Speed Adjustment
HOLLEY 6280 CARBURETOR
1.
Disconnect and plug vacuum hose at EGR valve.
2.
Disconnect and plug hose from carburetor at the heater air temperature sensor.
3.
Remove air cleaner, then disconnect and plug canister purge hose at canister.
4.
Remove PCV valve from valve cover and allow valve to draw underhood air.
5.
Disconnect and plug vacuum hose at distributor or ESA as required.
6.
Connect suitable tachometer, then start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
7.
Disconnect carburetor electrical connector, then remove the green duty cycle wire and blue idle solenoid wire from the connector. Reconnect
carburetor electrical connector less the two removed wires.
8.
Ground carburetor switch using a suitable jumper wire.
9.
Open throttle and place fast idle adjusting screw on the second highest step of the fast idle cam.
10.
With choke fully open, turn fast idle adjusting screw until specified fast idle speed is obtained.
11.
Return to idle, then reposition adjusting screw on the second highest step of fast idle cam to ensure speed is correct. Readjust as required.
12.
Connect vacuum hoses, then remove jumper wires.
13.
Disconnect carburetor electrical connector, then install green and blue wires in their correct positions. Reconnect carburetor electrical connector.
14.
Install air cleaner, then the PCV valve. Idle speed may change slightly. This condition is normal and engine speed should not be readjusted.
ROCHESTER QUADRAJET CARBURETOR
1.
Disconnect and plug vacuum hose at EGR valve.
2.
Connect suitable jumper wire between carburetor switch and ground.
3.
Disconnect and plug vacuum hose at canister.
4.
Disconnect PCV valve from cylinder head cover and allow to draw underhood air.
5.
Connect suitable tachometer, then start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
6.
Disconnect and ground oxygen sensor electrical connector.
7.
Allow engine to run for 4 minutes, then open throttle slightly and place fast idle adjusting screw on the second highest step of the fast idle cam.
8.
With choke fully open, turn fast idle adjusting screw until specified fast idle speed is obtained.
9.
Return to idle, then reposition adjusting screw on the second highest step of fast idle cam to ensure speed is correct. Readjust as required.
10.
Connect vacuum hoses, then remove jumper wires.
11.
Connect oxygen sensor electrical connector. Idle speed may change slightly. This condition is normal and engine speed should not be
readjusted.
