SYMPTOM/CONDITION

-

"Chirping" or "snapping" noise being generated near the front of the engine while the engine is running.

-

The alternator drive belt is missing or has "walked" partially off pulley.

The "snapping" noise sounds similar to a bad alternator bearing or electrical arcing. The noise and belt "walking" can be caused by alternator pulley
misalignment.

DIAGNOSIS

CAUTION:

EXTREME CARE SHOULD BE USED WORKING UNDER THE HOOD WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING.

If the noise is being generated near the front of the engine, a spray-type water bottle should be used to spray the grooved side of the alternator belt with
water while the engine is running. If the noise subsides (and as the belt dries, the noise returns) the alternator pulley misalignment is likely causing the
noise.

If the vehicle is to be subjected to subfreezing temperatures, the engine should be run for at least five minutes after this test to allow the belts to dry.
If the alternator belt was found to be missing or had "walked" partially off either or both the alternator and crank pulleys, then the alternator belt,
alternator pulley and crank pulley should be inspected for any foreign material lodged in their grooves. If nothing is found, the belt "walking" is likely
due to alternator pulley misalignment.
