Unexplained Vehicle Theft Security System/Vehicle Theft Alarm Activation (VTSSA/VTA) or Dead Battery
MODELS:
1996 (NS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to NS vehicles built at St. Louis (letter "B" in the 11th position of the VIN) prior to Nov. 17, 1995 (MDH 1117XX), and
vehicles built at Windsor (letter "R" in the 11th position of the VIN) prior to Nov. 21, 1995 (MDH 1121XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Body build variations and thermal expansion/contraction of the hood, may cause the under hood lamps to illuminate and if equipped with VTSS/VTA,
unexplained alarm activation. Also, the battery may run down with no charging system malfunction. The symptom can be intermittent.
Early production NS vehicles have a "short stroke" underhood lamp and VTSS/VTA switch (P/N 4687558) installed, current production vehicles have a
"long stroke" underhood lamp and VTSS/VTA switch (P/N 4687594) some of which may have been improperly installed and adjusted. Short stroke
switches and mis-adjusted long stroke switches have decreased plunger travel that can cause the described symptom.
DIAGNOSIS:
Raise the hood and measure the height of the switch from the top surface of the left hood hinge body half to the top of the switch plunger. If the height is
less than 15/16 in. (24 mm), perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves properly installing a new long stroke switch.
1.
Raise the hood and disconnect the wiring connector to the underhood lamp and VTSS/VTA switch mounted on the left hood hinge.
2.
Remove the underhood lamp and VTSSA/VTA switch by pulling/wiggling it out of the hinge.
3.
Verify the seal ring is on the wiring connector and then connect it to the new switch (P/N 4687594).
4.
Insert the new switch into the left hood hinge body half and then seat the switch by pressing on the base of the switch with a 1/2 in. (13 mm) deep
well socket.
NOTE:
Do not seat the switch by pressing down on the plunger.
5.
Ensure the underhood lamp and VTSS/VTA switch plunger contacts the hood and opens the circuit (underhood lamps go out) before the hood is
fully latched.
