Shim should be installed with carrier cover to prevent O-ring from being cut with shim.
6. Install front cover, then tighten screws to specifications.
7. Using seal puller tool No. 7794-A, or equivalent, remove overrunning clutch seal, then remove pinion seal.
INSTALLATION
1. Apply light coat of suitable oil to drive pinion seal.
2. Using seal installer tool No. 6507, or equivalent, install seal with spring side toward rear carrier case.
3. Replace spacer if grooved or damaged, then select a new drive pinion bearing shim as follows:
a. Using suitable one inch micrometer, measure thickness of original spacer and of new spacer.
b. If original spacer is same as new, use original shim.
c. If new spacer is thicker or thinner than original, use a shim of appropriate size.
d. Measure and record difference in size between new and original spacer, then measure and record thickness of original shim.
e. If shim size is smaller than difference in size between new and original spacer, add recorded original shim thickness to recorded difference in
spacer size, then use shim of that size.
f.
If shim size is larger than difference in size between new and original spacer, subtract recorded difference in spacer size from recorded original
shim thickness, then use shim of that size.
4. Apply light coat of suitable oil to pinion spacer, then install on pinion shaft with tapered side facing outward.
5. Apply light coat of suitable oil to overrunning clutch seal; then, using seal installer tool No. 6508, or equivalent, install seal with spring side away
from carrier case.
6. Install pinion nut and tighten to specifications.
7. Install clutch outer race and snap ring.
8. Apply suitable sealer to clutch sealing surface, then install clutch case to rear carrier case. Tighten bolts to specifications.
9. Check and fill fluid levels as required. Use only MOPAR Type 7176 automatic transmission fluid, or equivalent, in overrunning clutch housing.
Overrunning Clutch Assembly
REMOVAL
1. Remove rear differential assembly as outlined under Differential/Service and Repair.
