Valve Clearance: Adjustments

For proper clearance, valve adjustment must be set with piston at TDC on compression stroke with engine cold.

Rotate crankshaft noting exhaust valve movement. When one valve begins to close continue turning slowly until intake valve on same cylinder just
starts to open. This is the ``Valve Rocking'' position. In this position, clearance in the opposite cylinder can be adjusted.

After checking both clearances, Fig. 6, rotate crankshaft one half turn to bring next cylinder in firing order to the ``Valve Rocking'' position and
the paired cylinder can be adjusted. Valve rocking cylinders are paired to valve adjust cylinders as follows: 4 - 1, 2 - 3, 1 - 4, 3 - 2.

Adjust valve clearance by loosening locknut and turning screw until a sliding fit is obtained between valve stem and rocker, Fig. 6.
