Intake Air Heater: Testing and Inspection

1.

Disconnect vacuum hose from air switching/relief valve and connect a vacuum gauge to hose.

Apply parking brake and observe gauge reading.

On Front Wheel Drive Models.

a. With engine cold, engine vacuum should be indicated on gauge until coolant temperature reaches 125 degrees F on 1.7L engines, 150 degrees

F on 2.2L engines except California, or 125 degrees F on 2.2L engines for California.  When the specified temperature is reached, vacuum
should drop to zero.  If no vacuum is present when engine is cold, check vacuum supply and coolant controlled engine vacuum switch
(CCEVS).

b. With engine warm, no vacuum should be present on gauge.  If there is, check coolant controlled engine vacuum switch (CCEVS).

To check air switching valve, disconnect air supply hose from valve.  Disconnect vacuum hose from valve and connect an external vacuum source
to valve.  Start engine, air should flow from side port.  Apply vacuum to valve.  Air should flow from bottom port.
