SYMPTOM/CONDITION
This service procedure resolves two driveability problems outlined below.
The first driveability condition is flat and slow acceleration after slowing down for a few seconds. This symptom is known as "lean ramping". The
second condition is a bucking or jerking motion during closed throttle deceleration or partially closed throttle deceleration.

NOTE (1): Replacing this part number module will change the basic timing specification from 20~ BTDC to 12~ BTDC. Reset basic timing to 12~
BTDC with the vacuum hose to the ESA/EFC disconnected and plugged.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Remove original ESA/EFC module and install appropriate module from model application chart above.
2.
After installation of replacement ESA/EFC module on 1982 automatic transmission models it will be necessary to check and reset basic timing per
the adjustment chart below if required.
1982 1.7L Automatic Transmission Federal Emission System With ESA/EFC PN 5213890
Check and reset basic timing, if necessary, per original VECI label specification.
1982 1.7L Manual Transmission Federal Emission System With ESA/EFC PN 5213892
Reset basic timing to 120 BTDC. Reset curb idle speed and hot fast idle speed to original VECI label specifications (see Note on page 1).
1983 1.7L Manual Transmission Federal and California Emission System With ESA/EFC PN 5213892
Reset basic timing to 12~ BTDC. Reset curb idle and hot fast idle RPM per original VECI label specification (see Note on page 1).
