Hesitation/Stumble or Driveway Dieout After Cold Start
MODELS:
1990 - 1992 (BD) Laser/Talon
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Vehicles equipped with a 2.0L turbo or 2.0L non-turbo engine and an automatic or manual transaxle, may exhibit a hesitation, stumble or driveway
dieout within the first 60 seconds after a cold start.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using the Scan Tool (DRB II), and the appropriate diagnostic procedure manual, verify that all the vehicle engine systems are functioning as designed. If
diagnostic trouble codes (message/fault codes) are present, record them on the repair order for future reference, and repair as necessary. If no diagnostic
trouble codes (messages/fault codes) are present and all systems are functioning correctly, proceed with the following repair.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair involves cleaning several engine components of oil and carbon deposits.
1.
Inspect the air passages of the air flow sensor, air intake hose, and air cleaner housing for oil or carbon deposits. Clean as necessary.
2.
Check condition of air cleaner. Replace if contaminated with oil or dirt deposits.
3.
Using the Scan Tool (DRB II), verify the fuel injectors are functioning correctly. Clean or replace as necessary.
4.
As outlined in the appropriate service manual, remove the throttle body, air intake plenum, and intake manifold.
5.
Use Mopar Parts Cleaner PN 4318037 or equivalent, to clean oil, and carbon residue from the throttle body and intake system. Do not submerse
the throttle body in solvents, gasoline or any other cleaning fluids.
CAUTION:
USE THIS CLEANER ONLY IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA. DO NOT LET THIS CLEANER COME IN CONTACT WITH YOUR SKIN.
RECOMMEND THE USE OF RUBBER OR BUTYL GLOVES. WASH HANDS THOROUGHLY AFTER USE. AVOID EYE CONTACT. AVOID
INGESTING.
6.
With the air intake plenum and intake manifold removed from the engine, check the intake valves for carbon deposits. If the valves have heavy
deposits (more than a light coating on the valves), the intake valves should be cleaned, The suggested method for cleaning intake valves involves
the removal of the cylinder head from the engine. The cylinder head must be disassembled, and the carbon removed from the valves with a wire
brush.
7.
Inspect the spark plugs for carbon deposits. Clean or replace as required.
8.
Install the throttle body, and the intake plenum in the reverse order it was removed, using new gaskets.
9.
Drive the vehicle and verify the condition has been corrected.
